The brief from today:

Higuain announces retirement

Gonzalo Higuain announced his retirement today, which will take place at the end of the current Major League Soccer campaign. Currently playing for David Beckham owned, Inter Miami FC, Higuain played at some of Europe’s largest clubs before heading to the US to finish his career. Higuain came on the scene as an 18-year-old playing for River Plate in Argentina, and his fine form earned him a lucrative move to Real Madrid just over a year later. The Argentine would spend seven years in the Spanish capital scoring numerous goals, but his move to Napoli in 2013 was where he really set scoring records. His exploits in the 2015/16 season, in particular, for Napoli saw him reach 36 goals for the campaign, a current record for most goals ever scored in Serie A. Higuain would make a controversial move to rivals, Juventus, after that season, where he spent three years in total, winning league titles in each of those years, but he did have loan spells with Milan and Chelsea in the middle of that period. His record with Argentina was also quite impressive, as he was able to score 31 goals in 75 appearances, but he never managed to win any titles with the national team only reaching the 2014 World Cup final, and 2015 Copa America final. The 34-year-old will now call time on his career, but he can comfortably be viewed as one of the best strikers of his generation.

Marseille join World Cup boycott

Following on from the Lille city council announcement that they wouldn’t show any World Cup matches on giant screens in town as a form of protest against Qatar’s human rights record, other cities joined in on the demonstration. It was reported yesterday that Marseille had partially agreed, but they would still show the final if France were able to qualify for it. They were also pushing a message that talked about the cold weather not being conducive for outdoor viewing parties, and would rather promote local cafes and restaurants as preferred venues for watching matches. Today, however, the city of Marseille has come out with more certainty and said they actually wouldn’t show any matches, including the final. It is an abrupt shift from only a day prior, but it shows the growing negative sentiment towards the upcoming World Cup’s host nation.
