The brief from today:
Passive income
Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, will be moving from Bundesliga side, Union Berlin, to newly promoted Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. After scoring 15 goals in 31 league appearances in Germany, Forest triggered his €20million release clause today making him their record signing. The interesting thing about this transfer is how Liverpool are in the background collecting money from this deal. Awoniyi was originally signed to Liverpool back in 2015 for just under half a million euros, but after six years of loans around Europe because he wasn’t granted a UK work permit, he was sold to Union for €7.5million. The caveat is that Liverpool inserted a 10 percent sell on clause in that deal, so in addition to the €7.5million from Union, Liverpool will now pocket an additional €2million from the transfer to Forest. Fairly good business considering Awoniyi never even made an official appearance for Liverpool.
MLS adds another big name
Gareth Bale has decided to join Los Angeles FC as a free agent this summer. The Welsh star’s contract with Real Madrid expired this month, and he was rumored to be considering a return to his hometown club Cardiff City. With the World Cup five months away, Bale’s main focus now is staying fit as he’s virtually assured a place in the squad barring injury. In the end he has opted to leave Europe and ply his trade in the US. The deal will be for one year with an option to extend for an additional 18 months. He now joins Giorgio Chiellini as the second big name to join the LA side this summer.
